Terahertz Photonics : from ultra-narrow Quantum Cascade Resonators to room temperature nanowire detectors

Recent results on the measurement of the intrinsic linewidth and on the analysis of the frequency noise features of Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) will be discussed, together with their potential in polarization spectroscopy experiments addressed to high sensitivity molecular detection.
A final overview of current approaches for the development of high detectivity, room-temperature THz detectors will be given with a special focus on the recent demonstration of high-sensitivity terahertz detectors based on a 1D field effect transistor configuration, employing semiconductor nanowires as building blocks and properly integrated with low shunt-capacitance antennas to funnel the radiation into the strongly sub-wavelength detecting element.
